Basic Scone Recipe

It seems we can thank Anna, the Duchess of Bedford (1788 – 1861), for the pairing of tea and scones. It's said that she asked for tea and "sweet breads," which included scones, and was so taken by the combination that she repeated the order every afternoon thereafter, establishing the English tradition.

If you'd like to bake scones for your next Poetry Teatime, here is a simple recipe.

This delicious cake tastes even better on the second day so it can be prepared ahead of time for a Poetry Teatime. Check out the recipe below. Plus we share poetry books about fruits and veggies!

How to Make a Pot of Tea

How to Make a Pot of Tea

My copper kettle whistles merrily
And signals that it is time for tea.
The fine china cups are filled with the brew.
There’s lemon and sugar and sweet cream, too.
But, best of all there’s friendship, between you and me.
As we lovingly share our afternoon tea.

Fruits and Nuts

Fruits and Nuts

Poetry Teatime treats don't have to always appeal to the sweet tooth. Healthy snacks work just as well. Here is one colorful idea for a quick and fruity teatime.

Hot Cross Buns

Hot Cross Buns

Hot Cross Buns! Hot Cross Buns!
One a penny,
Two a penny,
Hot Cross Buns!
If you have no daughters,
Pray give them to your sons!
One a penny,
Two a penny,
Hot Cross Buns!

Tis the season for hot cross buns! They make a great Poetry Teatime treat for spring. Some recipes call for a white icing that cris-crosses the buns. One recipe calls for slashing the buns in a cross with a knife and then putting an egg wash on them. No matter what, they are yummy and not too sweet.

Caramel Shortbread Squares

Caramel Shortbread Squares

"They are so easy and I like them more than fudge, which is saying a lot. They are like homemade Twix bars and a little goes a long way. Make sure to cut them into small pieces!" —Nikki, Simmer & Shoot
