The Best Part of Me: Poetry Activity

Today’s poetry activity is a chance to explore your favorite part of someone very special—you! Do you love the sparkle in your eyes? The special tilt to your nose? The wiggle in your toes? Today’s activity is all about celebrating whatever features you love best.

We’ll be doing a variation on this poetry activity from Scholastic.com. Here are the supplies you’ll need:

  • colored paper
  • scissors
  • markers, colored pencils, or crayons
  • OR a camera and a printer

First, choose a favorite body part. It can be anything from your left ear to your elbow or your smile.

Then do one of these things

  • take a picture of that part of your body and print the image,
  • trace the body part
  • draw it on colored paper and then cut it out.

Eventually, you should have a piece of paper with the shape of your favorite feature.

Next, celebrate that part of your body by writing about it on the piece of paper. Start with “The best part of me is…” Then list the reasons! What does that body part help you do? What does it look like? What’s one of your favorite memories that your body part helped you accomplish? What do you love most about that feature?

Now, if you feel up to a challenge, craft your responses into a rhyme!

For some examples of what kids have written, check out Molly Maloy’s Lessons with Laughter blog. Also, you can read the book that started it all, The Best Part of Me (affiliate link) by photographer Wendy Ewald.

Teatime Tip:

To go along with this activity, serve food shaped like a face! For example, use blueberries to make a smile, banana slices as eyes, and a slice of bell pepper as a nose. Or cut out pieces of cheese in circles and triangles, and lay them on a cracker to make a face.
